Overview

Set within nearly 500 acres of the biologically rich Blue Ridge Mountains, LightEn is a retreat and education campus where ecological restoration, human well-being, and long-term stewardship are inseparable.

OLA's multi-year role has included feasibility studies, zoning approvals, campus master planning, and comprehensive landscape and site design across multiple phases of development. From the earliest planning efforts, the guiding principle has been a light touch on the land, carefully balancing retreat amenities, infrastructure, and access with the protection and restoration of natural systems.

The landscape strategy is rooted in ecological intelligence and informed by the site's forests, streams, wetlands, meadows, and remarkable biodiversity. More than 40 acres have been restored through native planting and reseeding, while stream and riparian restoration efforts are helping rebuild watershed health, improve climate resilience, and strengthen habitat for hundreds of plant and wildlife species. Thousands of native trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowering plants now support a growing mosaic of ecological communities across the property.

Rather than imposing a vision on the land, the work seeks to create the conditions for natural systems to recover, adapt, and thrive over time. Through rewilding, regenerative stewardship, and careful site planning, the landscape is becoming a living framework for learning, reflection, and connection to place.

At its core, the campus is guided by ecological intelligence, fostering deeper connections to nature and to place while honoring the land's ecological and cultural context.
